On Sunday 2nd November 16 Cadets led by Lt Peter Martin, OCdt Michael Hay and WO2 John Bowra went to the Tower of London to take part in the planting of the ceramic poppies in the moat of the Tower.

We had to be at the Tower by 0900 and with Tower Hill station being closed this meant an early start. We walked down from Bank station and crowds were already building up. Once registered we were shown 2 videos and given a safety talk and then we were taken out to the area we were going to work in. There were lots of other volunteers as well including a cadet unit from Durham and everybody worked in teams. Some were putting the stems together and the others were planting the stems and putting the heads on.

Not long after we started the rains came and continued for most of our stint, but this did not dampen our spirits and everyone worked well. The Tower aim to plant 10000 poppies a day using a morning shift and another in the afternoon. The group worked so well that we were halted 50 minutes early having planted 6000 poppies.

The project is well ahead of schedule for completing on the 11th and so we can all be pleased to have played our part. After collecting our T Shirts and badges we returned to Finchley.
